The shimmering array of colors in this real butterfly wing pendant is magnificent. I have handcrafted this necklace from a REAL Madagascar Sunset Moth! The wings are embedded under al arge 30x40mm magnified glass cabochon - set in antique brass. The Chain measures approximately 19 inches and is meant to rest on the chest.

Considered the most beautiful and colorful moth on earth, the Madagascar Sunset Moth (Urania rhipheus) is characterized by its shimmering array of bright colors. These colors are a warning to predators that it is poisonous if eaten. These moths are found throughout the calendar year all over the island of Madagascar. The native Malagasy people call them “lolonandriana” meaning “noble spirit” or “spirit butterfly”.

The antique bronze pendant features a real moth wing embedded under a large magnified glass cabochon on an 18″ chain.

*NOTE* No butterflies are harmed in the making of this jewelry. All butterflies are raised on butterfly farms and sanctuaries and allowed to live their full lifespan, which averages about 1 month, and then collected and sold so that their beauty can live on. Butterfly Farming actually helps to preserve rain forests and also assures the survival of natural butterfly habitats. Native people are encouraged to grow plants and raise insects rather than clearing land for cash crops.

The artist is a member of, and donates to the Rainforest Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the Rainforest and the many species that live within it.
